Ấm áp những tấm lòng

Thưa các bạn thân quý,

Từ khi 14 tuổi đến nay, đã qua 63 năm mà trái tim tôi vẫn tiếp tục mềm ra khi nghĩ có thể đem được chút xíu niềm vui cho các cháu thiếu ăn. Từ cái ngày một mình vào Xóm Nghèo sau rạp hát Quốc Thanh Sài Gòn năm 1952, chuyện trò với các cô bác sống trên nghĩa địa, con cái nheo nhóc, chở từng bác đi bệnh viện trên yên sau xe Velo Solex hay đưa từng chú đi mua thùng cách nhiệt để bán kem, rồi về nhà Chân Không cùng các bạn đi xin từng nắm gạo hàng xóm, đong thành mỗi bao 15 ký, phát cho những cháu nào chịu đi học. Chỉ vào dịp Tết hay Phật Đản mới có thể mời các cháu đánh giày vào tiệm ăn đàng hoàng như tiệm mì đường Nguyễn Tri Phương (trước 1952 còn mang tên Lacase). Ôi hương vị món mì xào cô bé 14 tuổi ngày xưa đã đãi trẻ em đánh giày được một bữa no nê!

Ngày nay chương trình Hiểu và Thương đã giúp được cơm trưa no nê cho hơn 9.000 cháu liên tục trong vòng 15 năm, lại còn hỗ trợ lương và tạo điều kiện tu nghiệp cho 250 giáo viên, bảo mẫu. Tại các tỉnh Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên, Bình Thuận, Đồng Nai, số các vị khuyết tật và bô lão cô đơn được chương trình tài trợ đều đặn hàng tháng gần 1.000 người, số các cháu học sinh, sinh viên nghèo nhận học bổng mỗi ba tháng hơn 600 người.

Mỗi năm vào dịp Tết, Phật Đản, Rằm Tháng Bảy và Tết Trung Thu, chương trình Hiểu và Thương không bao giờ quên đi phát quà đỡ ngặt cho nhiều gia đình quá thiếu kém, từ Đồng Tháp, Mộc Hoá, Bến Tre, Đồng Nai, Bình Thuận, đến Tuy Hòa, Khánh Hòa, Quảng Ngãi, Quảng Nam, Thừa Thiên, Quảng Tri và gần đây là đồng bào bị lụt lội ở Quảng Ninh. Mỗi phần quà bên cạnh giá trị vật chất từ 300.000 tới 500.000 VND (tương đương từ 10 tới 25 USD), còn kèm theo chút lời nhắc nhở thực tập Hiểu và Thương. Một ít lòng như thế chứ không biết sao cho đủ để đùm bọc những người trong cảnh khổ.

Chăm lo lúc ngặt nghèo, nhưng rồi còn gầy dựng cho đồng bào thêm điều kiện tự lực cánh sinh. Trong đó chương trình Hiểu và Thương đã xây 17 chiếc cầu tại các làng quê hẻo lánh cho trẻ em đi học dễ dàng, các bác nông dân tiện đường chở rau củ ra chợ bán, cũng như đã đào được gần 339 giếng tưới hoa màu để bà con làm rẫy có thêm thu hoạch vào mùa khô và đã cất 210 ngôi nhà tình thương cho các gia đình nghèo khó, neo đơn,…

Bao nhiêu việc làm được như thế cũng nhờ may mắn có các bạn từ khắp nơi đã đưa ra cả ngàn cánh tay từ bi cứu giúp người khốn khó. Các dự án xã hội của chương trình Hiểu và Thương chỉ có thể tiếp tục thực hiện là do các bạn không quên đóng góp cho các tổ chức đại diện tại các nước như Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation tại Hoa Kỳ (Hungry Children Project of Plum Village), Làng Mai tại Pháp, Maitreya-Fonds tại Đức, cũng như các Tăng Thân Hòa Lan, Tăng Thân Ý, Tăng Thân Tây Ban Nha, Tăng Thân Thụy Sĩ,…

Nhân ngày cuối năm, chúng tôi xin kính gửi đến các bạn lời cầu nguyện an lành dưới ánh hào quang từ bi của Bồ Tát Quan Âm, để bạn và quý quyến có được một năm 2016 đầy bình an và nhiều sức khoẻ.

Dear Friends,

Sixty three years have passed since I was fourteen years old, but my heart is still warmed whenever I see that I can do something – however small – to alleviate the suffering of children who do not have enough to eat.

I remember that very first day when I went alone to the slum behind the Quoc Thanh theatre in Saigon, and began talking to the people who were living in the old french cemetery, using the floor of each tumb as a concrete floor for their “house”. It was 1952 and I was fourteen years old. I saw roofs made with scraps of nylon tarp, and in the rain it would also rain inside! I heard children scream and cry, parents shouting to calm them as their house ”roof” was leaking. I brought one person, very sick with disease, to the hospital on my velosolex (my tiny teenager motorbike!), and I took some to the wholesale market to buy equipment so they could each become a street vendor of ice cream or sweet delicacies, and I “loaned” them some money to start their little business.

Back at home, I persuaded my young sister and one classmate to come with me and go knocking the door of our neighbors to request that everyday they put one handful of uncooked rice aside for my friends the hungry children in the Quoc Thanh slum. At the end of the week we would come round to each house to pick up the rice. We put all our tiny bags of uncooked rice into a few 15kg bags, and then gave them to families in the slum who agreed to let their children go to school (I helped them get registered).

From time to time, and especially after a special occasion like Wesak (Buddha’s Birthday), I would also use my own pocket money to take out a dozen young shoe-shiner children to come and eat noodles with me and my young sister Thanh at a restaurant on Lacaze Street (nowadays known as Nguyen Tri Phuong street). We were their new “sisters” and they gave us the funny nicknames Chi Tu and Chi Muoi. Oh, how sweet these evening partis at the Tri Phuong noodle restaurants would be! For sure, like us, the little shoe-shine boys would never forget it.

In the last fifteen years our “Understanding and Love Program” in Vietnam has offered a good, wholesome lunch to more than 9000 children in the provinces of Quang Tri, Thừa Thiên, Khánh Hoà, Bình Thuận Lâm Đồng, Đồng Nai and Đồng Tháp. This one simple, healthy meal each day helps them fill their empty belly at school so they can continue to stay there for their afternoon class.

It is thanks to you, our dear friends in France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, UK and USA, that we can do this. It is thanks to you that we can not only help provide lunch for these hungry young children, but we have also trained 250 maternity school teachers, whose qualifications are now recognised by the Minstry of Education. It is also thanks to you that in these provinces, we have been able to help one thousand people in need, both elderly members of the community who are isolated and poor, or those who are disabled. We have also been able to provide over 600 scholarships to young children who left our maternity classes, so they could continue their education and go on to elementary schools, secondary schools and colleges.

Although the destitute poor families are countless, we focus our energy so that four times every year, on the occasion of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, (Tet) the Buddha’s Birthday, (Wesak), the end of the monastics’ Winter Rains Retreat (Paravana Ceremony), and the occasion of the Autumn Harvest Full Moon, to offer gifts to the most destitute families.

We offer support to the provinces of: Quang Tri, Thừa Thiên, Khánh Hoà, Bình Thuận Lâm Đồng, Đồng Nai, Đồng Tháp, Mộc Hóa, Bến Tre, Tuy Hòa, Quảng Ngãi, Quảng Nam and Quảng Ninh. We try to offer each family one gift – a 20kg sack of rice, plus noodles, oil, a little gift of 200 000 dong= 10 US dollars. Together with the gift we offer them a card, reminding them to try to listen deeper so that they can better understand and love the people around them. That’s the minimum we try to do, and it is really just a token of our care and concern. It is thanks to your loving support that we have been able to achieve all these little miracles.

At the same time, the Understanding and Love Program has also completed  projects to help people to help themselves. For example we have provided resources to help dig 417 wells. These deep wells help irrigate crops during the 6 to 8 months each year without rain, and thus help bring income for those in these drying districts.

We have also helped build 17 bridges. Some of these bridges help connect four or five villages to a road that goes to the nearest big market, allowing poor humble farmers to bring their vegetables to sell in the market for a good price. Others are small, simple bridges which cross a creek.

A simple bridge like that can help children continue to go to school, even during the rains, and not be swept away and drowned by the surging water. In projects like this, we invite the parents of the children to contribute partly, their work or the materials, and we offer the rest to help construct the bridges safely. We have also helped build over 200 decent houses for very destitute families, who have many children and have nowhere safe to shelter during the rains.

We have been able to realise all these humble works  thanks to you all from various corners of the world who have  generously reached out your helping hands. Some of you have sent donations directly to us at Plum Village; others have gathered as a group in your own country – like Maitreya Fonds of Germany, like Leven in Aandacht in Holland, Pace Essere in Italy, the Thich Nhat Hanh UK Action Fund and the ANANDA Foundation of Spain. Yet others have got together as sanghas and contributed directly to the Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation in the US. We are especially grateful to donors, like our Anathapindhika John Hussman, who have contributed to our Understanding and Love Program every year a very generous donation at times of urgent appeals for help.

As the year draws to a close, we would like to offer you our deep thanks for your wonderful presence, and for your generous help in reaching out to those who are destitute in Vietnam. May the energy of Compassion of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara radiate light, peace, joy and good health for yourself, your family and your beloved ones during the holiday season and beyond.
